Chapter Twenty-Eight
Rys
I spend most of the day in Bakerâs Creek bathing, examining, and registering the puppies. Most of them are in good health. A couple of them need special attention though. Instead of taking them home, where Leyla has a place to foster them, she leaves them at the clinic.
Lincoln drives me back to Portland. I arrive around seven and check the freezer for one of Casâs famous frozen meals. He has a chef who comes weekly to prepare food so he can just warm it up and eat it after practice or a game. I choose chicken cordon bleu. It sounds fancy enough that I can use it as an excuse to open a bottle of wine.
When I sit to eat, my phone rings. Itâs Mom.
A stab of agony cuts through my insides. Iâve been avoiding her since the morning after the wedding. Itâs not that I donât want to talk to her. Itâs just thatâ¦okay, I have no use for her pessimism when Iâm in the middle of a storm. I need to surround myself with positive people who will give me good advice.
I can already hear her telling me how Iâll regret marrying a stranger in Vegas. But wasnât this what she wanted for me? For me to finally get married like Milly?
As if I invoke her, my sister calls. I slide my finger across the screen and tap the speaker button. âHey,â I greet her.
âItâs been more than a week,â she says.
âAnd yet, I havenât received a wedding present. I recall showering you with an insane amount of appliances when you finally walked down the aisleâwithout me.â
âYou canât use that anymore.â
âWhat, the presents? I thought you said wedding presents are the least I should give you after such a big life-altering step. If you ask me, thatâs a pretty dramatic statement.â
âNo, my wedding. You just did the same thing. You eloped and didnât even invite me to be part of the wedding party.â She sounds bitter, and I donât understand why weâre back to discussing this, but then I remember that Milly, just like Mom, likes to hold grudges.
âAt least you got to watch it from the comfort of your home,â I joke, taking a forkful of chicken.
âIt doesnât matter. The point is thatââ She pauses for dramatic effect. âPolaris, your mother and father are driving me insane.â
This doesnât surprise me. The fact that Mom is calling her often or that sheâs playing the martyr. Iâm about to dismiss her when I finally process her words. âWait, Dad knows?â
âThe entire world knows.â
I knew that, but I was hoping it wouldnât reach my father. This internet thing came to fuck everyone. I never lived in the old days of anonymity, but Iâm sure if my mother or father did something like what I did, theyâd be able to hide everything.
âHave I ever mentioned I hate social media?â
âNo, but we have a more important issue. Your parents would like to speak to you. Call them and sort this out soon.
